FEATURED PROJECT:
2008 - 2010: Senior Designer/
Project Management,
Opium Bars, Nosh for Posh, Bath, UK
Design Project: Hospitality
THE BRIEF:
Design & build a new bar and restaurant in a reclaimed space; a set of arched chambers that were previously an entrance to a 16th century dungeon in the centre of Bath, Somerset, UK. Establish this turnkey business as a leading hospitality venue in the city, Deliver a comprehensive digital, social and print marketing campaign with a 3 year cycle. Achieve recognition in the 1st 12 months. Become seed investment neutral after 18 months and return free profit.
DESIGN SOLUTION:
The design created from an amalgamation of visual research streams. When reviewing the use of Opium throughout history it was apparent that over the last two millenia Opium has had a prioritised use in cultural social behaviour. Therefore it was decided that the design was to reflect different periods of style throughout the year from Modern-Urban, Asian, Victorian Gothic, Greco-Roman.
The spatial planning of the space was a challenge, The space was a disused link of undrground arched chambers. These dated back to the 16th century dungeon that was originall built in forestry by the river. With the groeth of the city the dungeon had been built over and the arches forgotten about until we discovered the land and excavated. When to excavaing the space we removed 80+ tons of earth by hand due to the access and then had to tank the entire chambers creating a waterproof hemetic space. With fire regs and H&S we had to structurally change the entrances and create a fire exit. The interior construction separeated the chamer into 4 each with two sides. During the construction and refurb we discovered a natural spring well which we encompassed into the design with a toughened glass cover.

2005 - 2008 Producer & Designer – Anonymous Films
Design Projects: Feature Film Production Development & Financing & Design
Development and Sales of a feature film, searching for investment of £2.6M for a low budget shoot.
This involved Pre-Production Design from script to produce P&A collateral, sales brochures and show reel. Arrangement and co-ordination of screenings, sales meetings with sales agents and funds around Europe. Administration and budgetary finance, negotiations with financiers and funds and pitch presentations. Meetings and negotiations with talent and agents and control of rights publication.
This project is still in development. After 18 months we managed to accrue £2.4M of investment thereby reducing the completion funding to minimal and also managed to attach an A-B list premier cast with some well known faces in supporting roles.
The downfall of the project was the change in the tax investment laws concerning UK film and the co-production treaty with Northern Ireland.

2005 – 2007: Writer, Producer, Designer,
London, UK
Film Production: Rotten apple
THE BRIEF:
Production of a Feature Short in co-production with Film London East, Pre-sales with Micro Films and private funding.
The script was developed to highlight areas of social integration within the British ways of life and cultural heritage. The film project was given 10 months from conceptual development to delivery and was premiered on behalf of Film London as part of the cultural programme at the Raindance Film Festival. Note:I created a film that surpassed expectations and went on to win Best Film PRIX UIP in Berlin 2007 and was a nominee at the European Academy Awards 2008.
DESIGN SOLUTION:
I decided to devise a script that not only dealt with exterior social integration but that also reflected the loneliness and fear that the British social system has created in dealing with 'the outsider'. This was tackled in a script developed around one boys oedipal complex and fascination with his new stepmother, a drifter and the threat that she imposed to his as yet closed-off way of life in his remote hillside farm that he shared with his father.
Themes that I succesfully explored and showed were:
-
The attraction and mystery of the outsider and their benefit to one's initial situation
-
Jealousy of relationships leading to exclusion, disempowerment and resentment
-
Envy, disgust, hatrid, anger and grief
This film achieved a very warm review at it's initial premiere and was then picked up by 32 festivals worldwide. It won critical acclaim att the 57th Intnl Berlin Film Festival and was accepted to the Academy awards, BFI, TCM and travelled with the PRIX UIP selection to teaching seminars globally.

Bottle of Notes, Public Art Piece,
Claes Oldenberg & Coosje Van Bruggen
Production: Public Sculpture for
Town Centre, M'bro, UK
THE BRIEF:
To Celebrate the anniversary of Captain Cook, Middlesboroughs most famous son and Sea-faring Explorer. Pubic Sculpture based in Labdscape gardens outside Cityhall.
DESIGN SOLUTION:
The design was created by Claes Oldenberg and collated from research on Captain Cook's diaries. 'message in a bottle', this was the basi for the design. Excerpts ffrom his personal diary were taken and typographically laid out into 2 geometric nets. These were then rolled into the shape of a tubular note inside a bottle. The production was in sheet steel commissioned from the former British steel, another one of M'bro's famous exports. The sheet steel was then laser cut into the possitive type layer, excess steel was then reused to fabricate childrens playground furniture in the Captain Cook memmorial park.
This was my first professional commercial art job and was based on internship awarded as part of an honour scheme reward from my college (Cleveland College of Art & Design). My work was multi-task based consisting of the followig:
-
Studio assistant, documenting the design process in video and stills, making presentantation boards for local mayoral sign-off (client gates).
-
Sketching visualisations alogside Claes Oldenberg of finalised installation.
-
Detailing construction drawings
-
General Studio management; tele-conferencing, basic IT in 1994, administration and keyholder of studio.
